The OKC Fitness Phenomenon

OKC_Fitness_Phenomenon

Facebook recently released the top “most fit” cities according to the number of finessed-related mentions, check-ins and use of fitness apps over a period of three months. Oklahoma City found itself ranked #8 in the nation and the top “running city” per Facebook’s standards. And we’re more than just a little bit proud.

This got us thinking about the Oklahoma City fitness brands we’ve helped create who are now at the root of this fitness phenomenon.

First, a shout out to the runners leading the pack – especially those who are fans of our friends over at Red Coyote Running and Fitness. When Burke and Jon Beck first came to S Design in 2009, they had a vision and a plan to help transform the Oklahoma City area by promoting healthy lifestyles among its citizens. Today, they have a loyal following of running evangelists who have helped them achieve accolades as one of the Top 50 running stores in the nation and ranked among the top three stores in the U.S. in 2012.

We talk a lot about authenticity in branding and Red Coyote is a progressive sports retailer that completely lives it. Starting with the iconic mark we created together, capturing their beloved mutt Pancho – the original “Red Coyote,” they knew from the beginning that in order to succeed, they’d have to be more than a store. Today, they offer a customer experience beyond just selling shoes, by inspiring and supporting a passionate lifestyle with efforts like their Newbie Running Program, Form Clinics and their infamous Pack Pint Runs. With more than 7,000 Facebook fans, you can bet that this lovable brand is to thank for many of those running “check-in’s” on Facebook!

You also can’t talk about Oklahoma City and fitness without acknowledging our compadres at Schlegel Bicycles. A long-time partner of S Design, we’ve helped transition this dynamic husband-and-wife-owned cycling store from a small shop to a beloved Oklahoma City brand. Steve’s memorable personality has been a driving force from day one, inspiring memorable catch phrases (“Motors are for pansies”) and always looking beyond typical retail offerings by creating unforgettable branded events like SchlegelFest, Ladies Night and even a Christmas Sweater Day where customers receive a discount for showing up to shop in unfortunate holiday apparel.

As a result, Schlegel has captured the enthusiasm of countless customers and converted thousands of hobbyists into die-hard cyclists. It’s hard to find a brand as original and genuine as Schlegel Bikes, and we would easily argue that it’s these crazed Schlegelites helping Oklahoma City shoot to the top of the nation’s fit cities.

Finally, we’d be remiss to not acknowledge one of our most inspiring brands, Oklahoma City Riversport, and its role in revitalizing the sport of rowing in our area. We often preach the importance of living up to your brand promises in bold and inspiring ways. If there is any organization in the region who can boast of success on account of this commitment, it would be the Riversport team.

From their (not-so) humble beginnings as the Chesapeake Boat House, this dynamic non-profit is now the driving force behind bringing major national and international events to Oklahoma City, including the USA Canoe & Kayak National Championships, as well as the Olympic trials for rowing and the upcoming 2014 Canoe Marathon World Championship. Perhaps even more impressive than the events the site has selected to host is the respect the organization has achieved within the sport. This clearly couldn’t have happened without utter attention to every detail, from design to hospitality, and more than meeting the expectations of their brand promise.

To be honest we admit that the numbers might not really line up in an actual scientific survey of fit U.S. cities. But we think the Facebook statistic is even more exciting. Our city not only has a large number of runners, cyclists, rowers and swimmers but they’re excited about their lifestyles, sharing their enthusiasm and capturing some national attention as a result. And just like the brands S Design is lucky enough to be a part of, this energy is going to go a long way in branding our beloved city.

Verbode Branding + Materials

Verbode-Logo

Verbode is an Oklahoma City-based real estate brokerage that specializes in energy efficient and green housing options. They also have deep understanding and passion for our local Oklahoma City metro neighborhoods. As the only downtown real estate firm, Verbode’s realtors have a tuned-in perspective of the changing market. Their commitment to our community and a better environment is even found in their unconventional office space and virtual transactions. They have a completely digital and paperless office! (Except for these business cards, of course.)

Verbode owner Sarah Bytyqi originally approached us with her company, Green Wise Realty, for a logo design. We suggested she think about her name considering the descriptive and common verbiage as well as the over saturated green movement in the marketplace. After giving it some thought she decided to move forward by engaging us for the name and visual identity. The name needed to convey that they are a real estate company specializing in “green” homes without resorting to the clichéd usage of the word “green.” The name “Verbobe” is a combination of the word “verdant” and “adobe,” creating a new word that connects being green with the idea of a home.

The logo needed to primarily attract a younger audience while still appealing to everyone, and it needed to speak to eco-friendliness. The mark for Verbode utilizes two arching trees, and by adding a door the mark becomes a home.

After nurturing her new business for two years in the UCO business development center incubator, Sarah secured a stunning space in the TAP Architecture building on Broadway in downtown Oklahoma City. We worked with Sarah to complete the signage as well as the Grand Opening event materials and promotion.

“Working with S Design has been a key factor in building my business foundation. As a start up, the decision to partner with S Design to build my brand was critical to my early success. I was able to launch Verbode as a professional company and compete with seasoned brands. I think having S Design on my team was one of the best decisions. They have strategically directed my branding decisions and kept me from making major marketing mistakes. I honestly believe the brand is where we are today as a direct result of their expertise in brand positioning. I couldn’t be happier.” – Sarah Bytyqi, owner, Verbode
